Hornets sweep Highlanders in softball doubleheader

Jamie Schloredt is used to driving in runs when she puts the bat on the ball. The freshman catcher entered Tuesday’s doubleheader with UC Riverside with 22 hits on the season and a team-leading 23 RBIs.

So when she had combined to go 5-for-5 with a walk and no RBIs right before coming up in the fourth inning with the bases loaded she wasn’t going to let that golden opportunity go by.

“All of them (to that point) were little tiny bloop hits,” said Schloredt, who is more accustomed to hitting deep fly balls. “I must have hit one over every infielder.”

Schloredt fouled off nine pitches before she got the one she liked off of UC Riverside pitcher Sara Radabaugh and lined one into left field for two RBIs to make the score 4-1.

“I kept telling myself, ‘the pressure is on her,'” Schloredt said. “I just had to wait for her to make a mistake.

“That’s got to be the longest at-bat I’ve ever had.”

The Hornets (19-12) held on to win the nightcap 6-3 after winning the opener 7-1 and now have won 15 of their last 18 contests.

Teri Ann Caoagan drove in the first two Hornet runs of the second game in the first and third innings ?” both on two-out hits.

Sac State starter Cassie Cervantes had an up-and-down performance in the contest as she went the first five innings, struck out 12, walked nine and threw eight wild pitches. Junior pitcher Jennifer Fryou came in to relieve Cervantes and recorded the save while pitching two innings, striking out three batters and allowing just two base runners.

Caoagan, Cinque and Lindy Winkler all hit homeruns in the first game to power the Hornets to an easy 7-1 victory.

Cinque stifled Highlanders hitters while scattering three hits and striking out four. After allowing the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the first on a Cassie Greenwalt single Cinque retired 17 of the final 19 batters of the game.

“My first inning is usually my worst,” Cinque said. “After that I calmed down and adjusted to the strikezone.”

The Hornets now have eight days off until they open Pacific Coast Softball Conference play at noon on April 8 at defending league champion Loyola Marymount.
