No. 9 Cal sweeps Hornets at home

BERKELEY ?” For 11 games Jennifer Fryou waited for her first taste of playing time in the 2006 season. On Friday she stepped into the circle against one of the nation’s best teams and made the most of it.

The junior pitcher came in to relieve Michele Bochenski in the nightcap of a double-header at ninth-ranked Cal and allowed just two runs (one earned) run in four and third innings on Friday.

“I’ve been waiting to get out there and pitch for a while,” Fryou said. “It was making me crazy.”

Cal (10-2) ended up sweeping the double-header from Sac State by scores of 4-0 and 9-6, respectively, but coach Kathy Strahan said she was pleased with the team’s fielding and for the first time this season, the offense.

“I can’t look at the scores,” Strahan said. “That’s not an accurate measure of the work we’ve been putting in.

“These were two of the best games we’ve played so far.”

Cal did the bulk of its damage in game one with two outs in the bottom of the second inning. After recording the first two outs Bochenski surrendered a single to Carly Winger who advanced to second on a wild pitch and stole third. Lindsay James then singled scoring Winger, Woods doubled in James, Katie Vickers singled in Woods and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Emily Friedman followed with a single and Vickers scored on and error by Hilary Johnson.

The newly-inserted Fryou then gave up an RBI double to Alex Sutton to score the fifth run of the inning.

Ashley Dawson singled to open the third inning and came around to score two batters later when Hilary Johnson bunted and Cal third baseman Katie Vickers threw the ball away. Rachel Miles followed Johnson with a single up the middle, which scored senior centerfielder Lindy Winkler. Johnson would later score on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Gloria Toledo.

The Hornets got two runs in the top of the fourth inning on wild pitches from both Cal starter Lauren Frankiewicz and reliever Kristina Thorson. The third run of the inning came on a Jamie Schloredt sacrifice fly that plated Johnson. Fryou out-pitched Frankiewicz and nearly matched Thorson’s output toward the end of the nightcap.

“This is definitely something I can build on,” Fryou said.

Thorson ?” a two-time All-American pitched a no-hitter into the sixth inning and cruised to a three-hit shutout of the Hornets in the first game of the double-header which Cal won 4-0.

Sac State senior centerfielder Lindy Winkler broke up Thorson’s no-hit bid in the top of the sixth with a shot deep in the hole between second and third. Winger gloved it but was unable to make a play to first.

Miles and junior designated player Amy Jo McKenzie had the only other Hornet hits of the ballgame ?” both coming in the top of the seventh.

Cal struck for its first run in the fourth inning on a passed ball from Jamie Schloredt which scored Golden Bears pinch runner Erika Racklin. Prior to the fourth inning Hornets starter Nikki Cinque had worked three-plus innings of shutout ball while allowing just two hits and notching a strikeout.

The Golden Bears tacked on three more in the fifth inning on a Hayley Woods two-run single and a double steal attempt that scored Lindsay James.

Cal was playing its first games of the season at Levine-Fricke field, nestled in the Berkeley hills, after beginning the season with two road tournaments. The Hornets return to Shea Stadium on Saturday for a noon double-header with rival UC Davis.
