Cardinal stomps Hornets

STANFORD, Calif. ?” Seventh-ranked Stanford jumped out to a big early lead and didn’t look back as the Cardinal defeated Sacramento State 7-0 on Sunday at the Stanford Invitational.

Sac State (3-6) was playing in its fourth and final game of the tournament.

Hornet starter Cassie Cervantes struck out Catalina Morris to start the game, but then walked two batters, gave up an RBI base hit to Stanford third baseman Michelle Smith before walking the next three batters.

Stanford added four runs in the second inning on another RBI single from Smith, a walk with the bases loaded, a Missy Penna RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Jackie Rhinehart. Bochenski settled in after the second however and allowed four hits and no runs in the final four innings.

“Michele did a really nice job settling the team down when she came in,” Sac State coach Kathy Strahan said.

Freshman first-baseman Rachel Miles broke up Penna’s no-hitter with an infield single with one out in the fifth inning and followed that with a single in the seventh off of reliever Lauren Nydam as the freshman from Antelope went 2-for-3. Miles was one of only two Hornets to get a hit in the game as senior catcher Joanna O’Neill also singled in the seventh off Nydam.

Sac State picked up two wins at the tournament, defeating Drake 5-1 on Friday night and Santa Clara 3-2 on Saturday evening before losing to 1-0 to Birmingham Southern on Saturday night.

The Hornets return home to face Nevada at noon on Tuesday for their home opener at Shea Stadium.
