Ball hog diaries: Week 2

Kevin Lemieux

Editor’s Note: Sac State student Kevin Lemieux is hitting the hardwood this spring as an intramural basketball player. He is playing for the Duke Blue Devils, and each week he will be sharing his journal with The State Hornet.Second journalOn Monday night it was much of the same for the Duke Blue Devils. We played a great game but still managed to lose 35-31. Nobody likes losing or let alone talking or writing about it. So, let me do something I neglected to do last week, which is tell you a little about myself.

I’m 21 years old and a Business Administration major with an emphasis in Human Resources. I’ve been at Sacramento State since my freshman year. I lived in Desmond Hall and discovered intramural basketball around this time.

I grew up in the Napa Valley (I don’t make wine) and I played basketball from third grade all the way up until my freshman year of high school. When I was a freshman at Justin Siena High School in Napa I was about 5-foot-6 and I weighed 115 pounds. I played football and basketball my freshman year, and decided that focusing on football might be a better idea, seeing as I was one of the shortest guys on the team.

Between my freshman and senior years of high school I grew nearly a foot to 6-foot-4 and more than doubled my weight at 240 pounds. Once football ended my senior year I was asked to play on an Optimist basketball team in Napa, which I did. That’s where I rediscovered the joys of basketball! I learned to throw my weight around a little bit and after a 26-point, 24-rebound performance I decided to take up basketball again in college.

Currently I am 6-foot-6 and weight about 225 pounds and also the head manager of the basketball team here at Sac State. I really enjoy getting to be a part of Division 1 basketball and it’s always good to have sore ankles after playing Haron Hargrave in 1 on 1. Basketball has quickly become my favorite sport, and there’s nothing better than having basketball be such a big part of my life.
