Ball hog diaries: Week 1

Kevin Lemieux

Editor’s Note: Sac State student Kevin Lemieux is hitting the hardwood this spring as an intramural basketball player. He is playing for the Duke Blue Devils, and each week he will be sharing his journal with The State Hornet.First journalKnee-high socks. Check. Nike headband. Check. Pregame meal of macaroni and cheese with a Keystone Light. Check. Ability to jump – Crap! I knew I forgot something! Folks, it’s that time of year again. That’s right; it’s intramural 5-on-5 season. I play intramural sports because they keep me sane. After four-consecutive hours of trying to memorize equations for my finance exam, a guy needs a little relief.

My team’s name is the Duke Blue Devils (don’t ask me why). I think we’ll have a pretty decent team, considering the fact that they have me to play center. I think I’m the only person to ever fashion their game after the likes of Greg Ostertag, Todd Fuller and Mark Madsen. I may not be able to win the jump, even though I’m 6-foot-6, or make a shot outside my two-foot range, but dag-nabit, I may just grab rim on you if you turn your back, even for a second.

Well, we lost our first game on Monday to a team called Ham Sandwich (very intimidating). They decided to run a full-court press and we were down 19-2 in an instant. Who presses in intramurals anyways? We switched to a two-third zone on defense and we pulled to within 38-34, only to lose 56-36.

Wednesday, the Roc Hards got the best of us by a score of 37-31. We played a much better game, but let me tell you why I played terrible. The double rim in the small gym is my arch-nemesis. It’s one of the main reasons I can’t wait for the RWEC construction to get underway. It’s like there’s a force field catapulting the ball away from the rim every time I shoot. If you’ve played on that rim before, I’m sure you feel my pain. Until next time double rim.
