Seniors lead Hornets in regular season finale

This one’s for the seniors.

That sentiment echoed throughout the Hornets Nest and within each and every player for Sacramento State volleyball Saturday night as they took to the bright yellow court for the final time this season.

“I personally thought it would be nice to go out with a bang,” senior outside hitter Jackie Coudert said. “This has been without a doubt the best season of my volleyball career.”

While it wasn’t with the same force as their record setting match against Idaho State last Thursday night, the Hornets (23-7, 11-3 Big Sky) did put on a show for the home crowd one last time led by seniors Coudert, Sandra Bandimere, Emily Wilson and Stephanie Gamst in beating Weber State (4-26, 2-12) 3-0 (30-12, 30-18, 30-17).

Three of the four led all players in a statistical category as Coudert had a match-high four aces, Bandimere had the match high in kills at 15 and Gamst led everyone in assists with 38 and hitting percentage with a career high .714. The seniors also accounted for over half the Hornets offense as they had 33 of the teams 53 kills between them and combined to hit .537.

Already up big in game one, 25-12, Coudert toed the service line to close out the Wildcats with five straight points, one coming on an ace and three more on Bandimere kills.

The Hornets hit a scorching .514 in game one committing just two errors while forcing Weber State to hit .129. Bandimere had eight kills the first frame alone.

“We just came in with the mindset that we were going to win,” Bandimere said. “There really wasn’t any urgency.”

Bandimere finished the night with a .387 hitting percentage, 12 digs and two blocks.

Weber State came out much more competitive in game two and put together its best game of the match, hitting for their highest percentage at .176 and recording ten team kills.

The Hornets senior firepower was too much however, as Wilson served out a three point run with the score tied at 11 and the Hornets never looked back, going on to win 30-18 on a Gamst kill that Wilson assisted.

“The seniors were fired up to go out and play tonight,” Wilson said. “It’s always easier to play at home.”

Gamst was the only senior to play all the way around in the third game as head coach Debby Colberg substituted reserves in and out of the lineup with the game well in hand.

“I personally wanted to win this one really bad,” Gamst said. “I even did some things I don’t normally do.”

Sophomore outside hitter Atlee Hubbard had a match-high 13 digs to go along with two aces. Junior outside hitter Natalie Melcher had six kills and hit .417 while freshman Lindsay Haupt added four kills and no errors on nine attacks for a .444 hitting percentage.

The Hornets clinched the No. 2 seed in the Big Sky Tournament with the win and will travel to Cheney, Wash., next week to try and win the conference title and automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament on Eastern Washington’s home floor for the third straight year.

“It’s sad to see it coming to an end,” Bandimere said, “But we still have some games in front of us.”
