Loss puts Hornet women alone in last

The Sacramento State women’s basketball team has nowhere to go but up.

After dropping two more games this past week, Sac State finds itself in sole possession on last place in the Big Sky Conference.

Sacramento State women’s basketball lost its eigth-straight contest 66-51 on Saturday night to fellow bottom dweller Portland State.

The Hornets held their opponent scoreless for more then four minutes to open the game, but held just a 5-0 lead.

Sac State held a 9-7 lead before making a run. A block by Kristine Knowlton started a fast break that ended with a Sarah Craig lay-up, followed by a Danielle Iceman steal on the other end which led to another fast break basket by Stephanie Cherry. The run brought the score to 13-7 and forced Portland State head coach George Wolfe to leap from the bench and call a time out.

Sac State opened up a 10-point lead at one point in the first half before Portland State outscored the Hornets 15-2 in the final six minutes to end the half leading 27-24.

Portland state opened up a lead of as many as 21 in the second half. The Hornets brought the defecit to just nine before Portland State went on a 14-2 run to push the score to 65-44 with just over three minutes to go, sealing the victory for the visiting Vikings.

Portland state had four players reach double figures, with junior Heidi Stuart leading the way with 15. Senior Sarah Hedgepeth was impressive scoring 12 points, grabbing 13 rebounds, and passing out three assists.

Junior Alyson Thurman, who scored 12, led the Hornets for the second game in a row. Tyeisha Brown also reached double figures scoring 11.

The Hornets played without their leading rebounder Jessica Voisard, and nine game starter Sydney Gatson.

The Hornets only victory this year came at Portland State on Jan. 15, 56-50, but they were unable to complete the season sweep.
