After a strong start to the season, the Sacramento State baseball team saw its record drop to 3-3 after bookending a three-game series with losses against St. Mary?s College.

The Gaels, who were looking for their first victory of the season, defeated the Hornets 4-3 in the first game in Moraga, and 11-1 in the final game at the Hornet baseball diamond.

The only victory that the Hornets managed was a 7-6 come-from-behind win, also played at Hornet Field, capped off by Chris Kinsey?s walk off two-run home run.

In the final game of the series, the Hornets finished with more errors (6) then they did hits (5).

The Gaels started the scoring in the fourth inning with two consecutive doubles, which scored the first run of the game. The scoring continued for the Gaels in the fifth inning, when the first three runners scored before an out. The Hornets had a chance to ruin the Gaels? bases-loaded rally with no outs, but an error extended the inning.

In the sixth inning, the Hornets? defense continued having problems, committing three errors and allowing the Gaels to score two more runs.

“It just wasn?t a very inspiring performance,” Hornets coach John Smith said. “The thing that had been sparkling was the defense. We swing the bat better than that.”

The Hornets would have been swept in the series if they didn?t rally from a 6-1 deficit in Game 2. In the top of the sixth inning, the Gaels broke the scoreless tie when three of their first four batters came around to score. The Gaels scored one run in the sixth and seventh innings apiece.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Hornets scored their first run when pinch hitter Chris McCormack singled in Danny Gill. St. Mary?s Mark Teahan answered the Hornets? run by hitting a home run over the center-field wall.

That?s when the Hornets started their rally in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Kinsey doubled and Joe Evans singled. Mario Celillo hit a ground ball that looked to be an inning ending double play, but Gaels infielder Brett Wayne misplayed the ball, allowing Kinsey to score. Casey Fuller then capitalized on the mistake and hit a home run over the right field wall to cut the lead

to 6-5.Saint Mary?s had an opportunity in the top of the ninth, but Jeff Groeger struck out a Gael to end the inning with the bases loaded.

In the bottom of the ninth, Ryan Brown led off with a walk. Kinsey then took a fastball and hit it over the left field wall to end the game.

“I knew it was a fastball, that?s all he had,” Kinsey said. “It would have been pretty damn embarrassing to lose again. All it was going to take to come back was a little bit of a roll, a few hits”

In the first game of the series, the Hornets jumped out to an early lead when Kinsey and Celillo drove in two runs to make it 2-0. After the

Hornets? fast start, St. Mary?s Jason Waugh hit a lead off home run to cut the lead to one run.

Tito Barba extended the lead to two runs in the sixth with a double, driving in Bret LeVier. The Gaels countered in the bottom of the inning with a RBI double cutting, the lead to 3-2.

Waugh struck again with a two run triple in the fifth inning that gave the Gaels the lead for good.

Sac State will look to recover from the defeats on Saturday and Sunday Centenari at Hornet Field. The two teams will duke it out Saturday at 11 a.m. and at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Hornets faced causeway rival University of California, Davis Tuesday, but results were unavailable by presstime.
