Los Lobos blows the roof off University Union Ballroom

“Los Lobos” who recently received Billboards Lifetime Achievement Award, had a sold out concert at the University Ballroom on Thursday evening.
This isn?t the first time that “Los Lobos” has been at Sacramento State. Cesar Rosas, the lead singer for the band said, “I remember when we were on this campus, on the back of our truck, selling our first recording.” The album was titled “Just Another Band From East LA” Even though it was their first album, recorded twenty-five years ago, it wasn?t until last year that it was released for major distribution. “It was just the time to do it” Rosas said.
“Los Lobos” had people of all different backgrounds dancing to the blend of rock & roll, Tex-Mex, cumbia and much more.
James Navarro, a Sacramento State student said, “It is hard to find good music that crosses boundaries and generation gaps.
The crowd was thrilled when “Los Lobos?” invited Patricia Yepez, alumni of Sacramento State and musician for “Mariachi Femenil Las Aguilas” to play a traditional Mexican song with them. “It was like being in a dream,” Yepez said. “I don?t have the words to explain.”
David Hidalgo, Conrad Lozano, Louie Perez, and Cesar Rosas started their musical journey by playing at weddings, birthday parties, and Mexican folk festivals in their East L.A neighborhood. They called themselves “Los Lobos Del Este De Los Angeles.” It wasn?t until 1981 that Steve Berlin, a former member of the punk band the “Blasters” joined “Los Lobos” as the fifth member augmenting the sounds of the saxophone.
In 1982 they signed on with Slash Records where they produced their Grammy-winning single “Anselma” 1987 the bands version of Richie Valens? original song “La Bamba” won a Grammy and an MTV-video-music award.
Throughout the 90s “Los Lobos” returned to their traditional roots making new sounds releasing several albums including “This Time”, “Colossal Head”, ” Papa?s dream” and “Kiko”, an experimental rock album that received two Grammy nominations. It was named Album of the year by several credited newspapers including the Chicago tribune and the LA times.
Luis Torres, an on-air reporter at KNX News Radio in Los Angeles and the producer of their first album said, “(Los Lobos) are committed to their music? They are regarded as LA?s musical treasure. If you did not have an opportunity to see “Los Lobos” at Sacramento State, they will be performing May 11 and 12 at The Nugget Casino in Reno.
