Sac State has the tools to recruit

Damian Lima

Some things are for certain this time of year. Students are figuring out which school tax credits are most beneficial, there’s always news about the rain shortage and how we need more rain, and of course a last place conference finish for the Hornets’ men?s basketball team.

I, for one, hate everything related to taxes, had enough rain in the last few weeks to last me a lifetime, and I believe that we can get this program up in the air to stay. Let?s look at what we have going for us that other colleges do not. For starters, “the greatest show on court” also known as your Sacramento Kings.

I don?t know about you, but if I was a young blue chip athlete, and I saw the Kings play, it wouldn?t be long before I associate entertaining basketball with Sacramento. Bonus points for the fact that the Hornets play pre-conference games at Arco Arena.

But the Hornets need to do a better job building a bridge that connects Kings? basketball with Hornets? basketball. Could you imagine a young recruit getting a call from C Webb (let?s just hope he doesn?t mention our lack of soul food spots here in Sacramento) endorsing Sac State? Heck, little used point guard Darrick Martin would probably do the trick.

We also have the natural advantage to take a page out of the realtor?s book: location, location, location.

We are uniquely nestled a short distance from the mountains and the snow, and only a 3-iron from the bay. So take that Montana State. Let?s see: Golden State or Big Sky country? Comfortable year-round weather or blizzards that bury your Volkswagen. I think you see me working here.

This is also a golden opportunity for the program because of the fact that this is the first year the Hornets? coaching staff can recruit out of state. This is really our chance to make a move on the competition. From the outhouse to the penthouse. Coach Jenkins and company, there are your weapons, now use them wisely.
