Fee increase may curb parking nightmares

Continuing in its quest to ease the parking situation at Sacramento State, the University Transportation and Parking Services? Transportation Advisory Committee is once again visiting the issue of raising parking permit fees.

In a meeting Monday morning, the committee discussed the need to increase permit fees to cover the construction of more parking spaces on campus. Over the next few years, parking is expected to worsen as the construction of new buildings takes away hundreds of spaces in the Overflow Lot.

According to Ronald Grant, director of Support Services, the construction of the Regional and Continuing Education, Foundation Research and the Capital Public Radio buildings will put a strain on the parking situation.

“We?re going to be impacted parking-wise,” Grant said.

He added that it will become necessary to increase the number of parking spaces with the construction of a third parking structure, ideally to be located in Lot 8 near the Library. However, UTAPS does not currently have the funds for the construction.

UTAPS is required to have the funds one year in advance of the planned construction date. “I know we?re going to have to raise parking fees,” Grant said, possibly by as much as $10 per month. “It?s not going to seem like an ungodly amount if we use the money positively.”
