Shortly after the end of the Spring 2000 semester, President Donald Gerth named Catherine Emihovich, Sacramento State’s new dean of Education.

“Dr. Emihovich is well prepared for this senior administrative position. I look forward to working with her as she assumes this leadership role,” he said during the announcement in May.

Emihovich has an extensive background in educational psychology and children?s issues. She holds a doctorate in educational psychology from State University of New York at Buffalo, where she worked prior to accepting the dean?s position.

At SUNY, Buffalo, Emihovich was the director of the Buffalo Research Institute on Education for Testing before returning to the faculty level as a tenured professor. She returned to the faculty level to gain more knowledge in her field.

“I wanted to do some more research,” she said.

Emihovich?s research projects have included children?s language use in classrooms and peer relations, the affects of segregation on kindergarten students and the affect high school health programs have on the teen pregnancy rate. Her teaching interests include child and adolescent development and classroom applications of educational psychology.

In her interview for the position in May, Emihovich said that she would help train college students to educate the next generation of students.

“If we?re going to help children succeed, we need to develop a more holistic picture,” she said.

Emihovich added that high standards are important for students to be prepared for the work place in the 21st Century.
