Hornet athletes walk for cancer

Sacramento State athletes came out in force to raise money for “Pink, Faith, and Me,” a walk for breast cancer awareness, this past Sunday. More than 400 of Sac State’s student-athletes walked around the Hornet Stadium track for about 20 minutes.

The walk was designed to raise money in support of a cure for cancer. Organizer Megan Frost was pleased to see a strong turn out.”This is an event to get student-athletes involved in this community. It is a disease that affects everyone,” Frost said. Frost has a close family friend with cancer that is currently in remission. Frost played forward for the women’s soccer team and graduated in 2005.

“It’s real, real close to my heart. Anytime there is an event to support a cure I try to help and I encourage the team to go out and help,” football’s head coach Steve Mooshagian said. Mooshagian had a cousin die recently from cancer.

For Mooshagian’s team it was mandatory to brave the heat in uniform and walk. The women’s soccer team left the school colors behind for pink and white uniforms in honor of the event.

While several football players were throwing Hail Marys down the track, the other student-athletes formed a massive wall and paced themselves. Hornets from every sport came out, excluding softball, which was facing Portland State in a double-header.

Frost asked the student-athletes for a minimum donation of $25 and each person had their own approach.

“Our parents,” declared several members of the volleyball team. “I went to my classes, told them who I was-and asked them to donate anything that they could. I got a total of $86 from my two classes,” junior Leah Klemenhagen said.

“My boyfriend,” junior Atlee Hubbard said, “I got $10 from him.”In return for their time and efforts the student-athletes were treated with barbecue. Five hundred to 600 hotdogs were being prepared while the teams made their rounds. All the money that the student-athletes raised will be donated to Sutter Roseville Breast Cancer Center.
