The Faculty Senate meeting was filled with applause as the students being awarded the Faculty Endowment for Student Scholarship Award were announced.

The Thursday meeting decided awards for the 2014-15 academic school year, which covers tuition expenses for selected students.

“We are giving seven awards this year,” said Faculty Endowment for Student Scholarships Committee Chair Tracy Hamilton. “The committee could have easily given 30 awards and they would all be deserving of the scholarship.”

Hamilton noted the award gets its funds through donations and took the time during the ceremony to reach out to those who are interested in donating to the fund.

“You can give a little bit each month out of your salary — $10, $20, $100 if you are feeling really generous — and we can give more of these awards,” said Hamilton. “We are giving more out than we have in the past because people have been starting to donate.”

Of the seven awards given, five were awarded to undergraduates, and the additional two were awarded to post-baccalaureates.

Students like psychology major Jennifer Blair were humbled to accept the award. She said her experience with education came from more than just a classroom.

“I am deeply honored to receive the 2014-15 Faculty Endowment for Student Scholarship Award,” said Blair. “It came from being part of clubs and internships, and researching activities, and community involvement.”

Post-baccalaureate nursing student Peter Lindbeck acknowledged his love for his profession and described what it is to love one’s career.

“When you truly love what you do, you love going to work and school and clinic everyday. All-nighters are no problem usually, and it’s something easy to do when you love it and you want to be around it all the time,” said Lindbeck.

Aside from the award ceremony, the Faculty Senate continued discussions on California Northstate University moving into Folsom Hall during open forum.

A resolution was brought up for consideration.

“I am here to inform the Senate that we will be submitting a resolution, not just for physical therapy but for most of the departments of our college, including departments from other colleges across the university,” said physical therapy representative Brad Stockert. “We are really distressed by this, so we requested all campus departments, communities, entities be given the opportunity to embed. We are very concerned about parking. Today in-parking-house is only half full. When speech language pathology moves in we will double the number of people in the building.”

In response to the resolution, Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Administration and Business Affairs Mike Lee spoke out as to why the decision to lease to CNU was taken.

“UEI entered the purchase [of Folsom Hall] and the university has to master lease that entire space,” said Lee. “As part of the bonding requirement to borrow money to pay for that building, [the] chancellor’s office requires campus to rent out to a non-Sac State entity 30 percent of the space; roughly a little bit over 60 thousand square feet can not be used by Sac State.”
