Sigma Chi invites students to beat cars with MADD

On Thursday afternoon Sigma Chi and Mothers Against Drunk Driving partnered for the first time to bring awareness of drunk driving to Sacramento State students.

Located between Parking Structure II and the bookstore, two donated vehicles were in a taped perimeter for the car smashing event. Sledge hammers and gloves were organized by the Sigma Chi booth and 102.5 KSFM played music for the event.

Participants gave a dollar to hit the car with the sledgehammer once or five dollars for ten hits.

Organizer and member of Sigma Chi Steve Zaki said, “It took about a month to organize the event. The cars weren’t supposed to come with the windows so we are behind schedule. We had to smash the windows out before participants could join in.”

Sigma Chi usually organizes social events, such as the formal they put on at Ace Of Spades for 900 guests this year. The car smash event was their first philanthropy event of the semester.

Sigma Chi president Chad Davies explained a representative from MADD was out at 5 p.m. to talk to any participants about the repercussions of drunk driving and how to prevent any more tragedies from happening on campus.

At the start of the event there was a crowd of 20 and many in the crowd were fellow Greek members.

“It felt great to release some aggression,” said Phi Sig member and junior government major Nichole Sidney.

The primary turnout were members of Sigma Chi, friends and fellow Greek members.
