Sacramento State’s women’s basketball team completed its two game homestand with a victory over Portland State University, Saturday afternoon at The Nest.

After losing to Eastern Washington last Thursday, the Hornets, aided by a 22-point effort from freshman guard Gigi Hascheff, beat the Vikings 84-80.

Sac State head coach Bunky Harkleroad said the victory was not easy but he was pleased with the outcome.

“We played well enough to win,” Harkleroad said. “Defensively at times we let them get to the rim, but we were physical.”

Hascheff led Sac State in scoring and has averaged 18.4 points per game over the last five games. Harkleroad expressed his thoughts on Hascheff’s performance and the importance of her presence in the lineup.

“She did a good job today, and in a four point game, 22 points from her was huge for us,” Harkleroad said. “Gigi believes that she can lead us and some nights she’s proven that she can.”

Sac State senior guard Alle Moreno tallied 16 points and eight rebounds. Moreno said the win was huge for the team down the stretch.

“We finished at the end and we really needed a win just to get rolling again,” Moreno said. “We needed this to stay up in the standings and we worked our butts off.”

Defensively, Sac State allowed the Vikings to shoot 53.3 percent, but had some key stops down the stretch. The Hornets forced 25 turnovers led by junior guard Takara Burse who had four steals.

“For me, if my defense is flowing then my offense is flowing,” Burse said. “We try to get every stop obviously, but we buckled down today and focused on not fouling.”

As a team, Sac State shot 41.3 percent overall and 31 percent from 3-point range. The Hornets converted on 23-33 from the free throw line.

Portland State (6-17, 4-10) sophomore guard Emily Easom scored a game-high 23 points on 9-15 shooting, including 5-10 from 3-point distance. Freshman guard Lauren Holt scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

Sac State (16-7, 8-6)  will hit the road for two games, starting with Northern Colorado this Thursday. Tip-off is at 6:00 p.m. at the Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion in Greeley, Colo.
