Sacramento State Police uncovered a 26 suspicious bundles of tape since the start of the year on the west and east perimeters of the campus, including near the American River levee and Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

Similar bundles, first discovered in September near the train embankment, were wrapped in black tape and contained wires, broken electrical components and other harmless debris.

A total of 41 bundles have been found, but police remain unsure of when they were first placed.

“We are continuing to actively investigate in and receive assistance from outside agencies,” said Detective Jason Johnston. “We’re continuing to pull off as much identifying information from off the packages to find out who is placing on them.”

Johnston said Sacramento Municipal Utility District has also discovered similar packages in its power substations near the university.

On Jan. 9, a total of 21 bundles were found, including several near the greenhouses and Guy West Plaza. Police evacuated two people from a science laboratory and closed off State University Drive while the investigation took place.

Another tape wrapped bundle was found on Jan. 15, between the bicycle compound and Sequoia Hall.

“We obviously are looking to solve the case by identifying the person or persons involved,” said Police Chief Mark Iwasa. “That is a priority for our department.”

Police conducted a campuswide investigation Jan. 22, searching all outside of Sacramento State and discovering three more devices.

With students returning to school, Iwasa said the bundles could turn into a disruption.

“None of them have been dangerous,” Iwasa said. “It’s just something you have to take reasonable precautions with because you don’t know what’s in any particular package until it’s cleared.”

Any information anyone may have regarding these bundles can contact the Sacramento State Police Department at (916) 278-6851 as soon as possible.
