MOJO: Art spreads awareness about missing Romanian children
September 12, 2008
Art history student Lisa Franklin’s “Missing Romania” art piece displays 46 pairs of children’s shoes dangling against a wall outside Kadema Hall.
The piece, showing that 46 children go missing in Romania every month, is displayed on the wall across from the Robert Else Gallery.
“Lisa Franklin has been helping me with this exhibit on contemporary Romanian art,” said art history Professor Elaine O’Brien.
“The whole display case is information about Romania. She researched it, found that there were more than 500 children reported missing every year and wanted to do something about it.”
According to O’Brien, this piece, in conjunction with the Contemporary Romanian Art exhibit, is meant to make students aware of the world.
“This is a traveling show. These artists are from Bucharest and will go to France first, then to Sacramento, then to Florida, and finally back to Bucharest,” O’Brien said.
In the Traces: Contemporary Romanian Art booklet, Ann Albritton says, “Through this exhibition we hope to bring traces of contemporary Romania to Pont Ave, France, and to Sacramento and Sarasota in the United States, and at the same time discover tracks made by other Romanians already here.”
