Sacramento State’s men track and field team took first place in the Mondo Mid-Major Challenge at Hornet Stadium, Thursday through Saturday.

The Hornets beat out seven schools including Montana State, Utah State and Causeway rival UC Davis by winning seven events led by a pair of sophomores on the track.

Evan Crayton-Crogan finished first in the 400-meter run with a personal best of 47.32 seconds, which is also sixth best in school history.

In the hurdles, Paul Lyons won both the 110-meter hurdle and 400-meter hurdle events with times of 14.21 and 52.02 seconds. His 110 time was just one tenth of a second off from his personal best.

On the field, Hornet sophomore Zach Coniglio won the shot put and junior Jessie Elvrom won the javelin throw.

Sac State scored 214 points in total, 87 points higher than second-place Utah State and 96 points higher than third-place Montana State.

Although the women’s team won four events, the Hornets finished in second place behind BYU.

Junior Morgan Pope won the 200-meter dash, Dominique Whittington won the 400-meter run, and Sakya Bolton won the 110-meter hurdles.

Both the men’s and women’s teams also beat Davis by a combined 183 points.

Track and field will continue their season next Friday when the teams are split up to compete in both the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif. and the Beach Invitational at Long Beach State.
