Freedom a freshmen experience

Being on your own and having more responsibility has been the main eye-opener to many of the incoming freshmen, according to freshmen interviewed after the first week of classes.

“The teachers are not pushy, so it’s your choice to go to class and do the work,” said Rex Sudaria, a freshman who plans to go into mechanical engineering. Sudaria also noticed that compared to high school, “there’s just a lot more people and they stick to themselves.”

But he wondered, “Where do all the girls kick it at?”

Jill Kollman, a freshman who plays on the soccer team said she’s having a lot of fun.

“Everything is more laid back and nobody cares what you say or do,” she said. Freshmen Sara Surratt said she also find the teachers are more laid back.

“They seem more friendly and personal. My Favorite teacher is Mr. Suzuki, who teaches art,” Surratt said.

One thing Surratt can’t stand is the parking.

“I have to get up an hour and a half before my class starts at 9 a.m.,” she said.

Hong Nguyen also said he has to get up very early before his first class.

“I have to leave an hour early before class,” he said.

Once he gets to school, Nguyen said he doesn’t get easier. “I have to walk a lot and my legs get tired.”

Freshmen Liz Gonzalez said she finds the teachers are laid back “as long as you come to class, ” and that people are pretty friendly.

“People aren’t afraid to talk to other people,” said Liz Gonzalez, a freshman who is thinking about majoring in kinesiology.

Dorm life has also had an impact on the freshmen.

Jessica Whalen, known as “Spaz” from KSSU 1060AM, lives in the dorms and said that “the freedom is awesome, but I wasn’t prepared for this.” She also said that she is taking too many classes because the teachers at her high school did not prepare her for college.

Danny Cho, a freshman that lived in the dorms last semester said that “one semester was enough” of the dorm life.

Josh Mandel-Sonner and Koritha Ramos, both living in the dorms, said that the only thing the dorms lack is activities. But, they do like the wide variety of food they can get in the dorms with their meal tickets.

“The dorms are pretty clean, but they’re too far from my classes,” Ramos said.
