Gonzalez calls Green Army flier featuring Herky the Hornet with sombrero offensive

Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez in a message to all faculty and staff brought attention to a flier he called highly offensive created by the student director of the Green Army.

The flier was meant to promote a baseball game on May 5, featuring the school mascot wearing a sombrero and serape while holding a bat with a piñata in the background.

“I want to reassure the entire campus community that we condemn such material and that we will not tolerate such behavior and stereotypes on our campus,” Gonzalez said in an email.

Athletics Director Bill Macriss has ordered the flier to be taken down and removed from circulation on social media.

Wednesday, the Green Army posted an apology on Instagram:

“The Green Army apologizes for the recent flier that was posted to promote student attendance at the May 5 baseball game. It included insensitive imagery and was taken down as soon as we realized its offensive nature. We are an organization meant to promote and build school spirit. Our recent misguided flier instead hurt a great number of fellow students for whom we care deeply and, for this, we humbly apologize.”
