The truth about “crazy”

Elizabeth Zelidon

Taylor Swift knows she has a reputation of coping with her relationships through song lyrics; she is embracing it and so am I. In her latest single, “Blank Space”, from her 1989 album, she plays the “crazy” ex-girlfriend the public seems to think she is.

The song, which is full of satirical lyrics, bravely sings, “so it’s gonna be forever

Or it’s gonna go down in flames. You can tell me when it’s over. If the high was worth the pain.

Got a long list of ex-lovers. They’ll tell you I’m insane. Cause you know I love the players

And you love the game.”

The music video, leaked on Monday, had everyone in shock. Not only do the lyrics of this song seem to paint “crazy” to a T, but she takes the crazy ex-girlfriend to a whole new genius level.

In the beginning of the video she is the romantic, whose love songs go back to the innocent “love story” era of 2008. Half way through the song however, she has turned into a psycho ex-girlfriend, destroying portraits, cell phones and a rare Shelby AC Cobra.

Swift did not actually destroy the Cobra, no worries there, but she did destroy the reputation of being a young and innocent country star. Yes, she is young and reckless as she beautifully sings in the song, but definitely could be seen as a mature role model as well.

How many women do not have the burden of being called “the crazy ex”? One minute your partner loves you, the moment after a break up is calling you names and rumor spreading. Well, Swift is only 25 and has been dealing with worldwide rumors since her early twenties.

This song is a symbol of how far she has come and to show the world if you can not beat them, join them. A lesson that takes many years to learn, and here she is embracing it for our entertainment. She might be crazy and young and fall in and out of love way too easily, but man does she make a great song out of it.
