Dunaway impresses at Fresno State Classic, as Hornets finish fourth

Women’s golf struggled to put consistent rounds together to move up in the standings today at the Fresno State Classic.

They finished in fourth place out of five teams and fell out of contention after the second round when the third place team, CSU-Northridge, had a 20-stroke lead going into the third round.

Experience does not always matter as freshman Katie Dunaway showed with her ninth place performance at the Fresno State Classic, only the third tournament of her collegiate career.

Dunaway had one of the best third rounds in the field, shooting a even par of 72. The round was the second best she’s had this year after shooting a 71 in the first round of the WSU Cougar Cup. For the tournament, she shot a 77-77-72–226 card.

Senior Sagee Palavivatana rebounded in a big way by finishing in 11th place, after struggling in her first two tournaments of the season. After posting a tournament stroke average of 241, she shot a 228 at the Fresno State Classic. She was able to build on her day one success of shooting two rounds of 75 and finished round three with a score of 78.

Fresh off a fourth place finish at the Cowgirl intercollegiate tournament, Junior Rockelle Sande finished 17th at the Fresno State Classic. A pair of double-bogeys on No. 1 and No. 10 were the only problem holes on the day as the rest of her round three included 13 pars, two bogeys and one birdie. She shot 78-79-77–234 for the tournament.

Sophomore Chloe Bartek and Senior Nicolette Bondura rounded out the Hornets lineup and were not able to break 80 in any round during the tournament. Bartek shot a 81-82-82–245 score and tied for 25th place. Bondura shot a 89-81-85–256 and finished in 27th place.

Senior Lexie Hall competed in her first tournament of the season as an individual and shot an 83-79-82–244 and tied for 22nd place.

Fresno State dominated at its home course and shot an 883 for the tournament winning by 19 strokes.

Madchen Ly of Fresno State won the tournament by one stroke over fellow teammate, Hannah Sodersten. Fresno State had four of its players win the top four spots in the players standings.

Women’s golf will continue their season Oct. 21 at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational in Wahiawa, Hawaii.
