Sophomore outside hitter Morgan Stanley lead the Hornets with 14 kills and six digs in a five set match for the Sacramento State Invitational (25-17, 22-25, 23-25, 25-16, 15-3). Stanley was the only Hornet to compete in all five sets for the invitational.

Sac State volleyball had a consistent battle in every match against Fresno State until midway through the 4th set.

The first set started off with the Hornets trailing closely behind the Bulldogs, but resulting in a loss of 25-17.

The second set was successful resulting with a win of 25-22. Freshman middle blocker Lana Brown lead the team with five kills and tied with Stanley scoring 6 points each. Sac State’s best team attack by set percentage for the day was held during the second set with .444.

The third set was a momentum shifter for the Hornets when the Bulldogs took two timeouts to try and stop the women from continuing their lead. A key kill by junior outside hitter Sloan Lovett during the third set gave them the lead at 16-15, winning this set 25-23.

Sac State was the first to score in the fourth set. The women kept the lead until Fresno State took over with seven straight points, taking the 11-5 lead.

The team only scored five more points in the fourth set resulting in a loss of 25-16.

After the fourth set loss the women took a fast loss in the final fifth set with a final score of 15-3. The Hornets first score in the fifth set was due to an error from the Bulldogs, giving them their first point (9-1).

Coach Ruben Volta said the loss started when the women missed serves and that the loss was in no way a result of their young roster.

“Missing that many serves allows them to stay in the game,” Volta said.

Freshman outside hitter Shannon Boyle agreed that serving was attributed to the loss.

“We just beat ourselves serving,” Boyle said.

Stanley agreed and knows her team could have done better but that they let Fresno gain control.

“We let them control us and take over momentum,” Stanley said.

Friday’s match was the first of a two-day tournament at Sac State’s home opener. The women will take on Loyola Marymount at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday.
