Junior Owen Taylor led the Sacramento State men’s golf team in the Fresno State Lexus Classic Tuesday, but it wasn’t enough as the team struggled overall.

Taylor shot three rounds of 74, tying for 13th place. The Hornets, after shooting an opening round 297, struggled to get any rhythm going, shooting a 300 and a 308 in rounds two and three finishing in 12th.

The tournament featured four teams ranked in the top 100, including Brigham Young University, University of San Francisco, Santa Clara University and the University of Texas at El Paso.

Junior Luke Kristo started the tournament strong in the opening round, scoring birdies on holes 1 and 18. He followed that up with two rounds of 5-over par, giving him a share of 35th place for the tournament.

After leading the Hornets in the opening round at even-par, freshman Robert Parden struggled in rounds two and three. He followed up a six-over par second round with a 14-over par third round finishing tied with Kristo.

Senior Jordan Swanson had a solid first round, including three birdies in a row on holes 14, 15 and 16. He finished the tournament at 16-over tying for 51st.

UC Santa Barbara won the tournament shooting 873 combined as a team, led by senior Jordan Epstein, who got a low score of 214 for first place. Fresno State, the host of the tournament, finished in ninth.

The Hornets, as a team, combined to shoot 905, their highest all season. Their previous high came back on Sept. 24 at the Dash Thomas Memorial in Eagle, Idaho, in which they shot an 893.

The team will rest up and look to improve as they get ready for the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, Texas, on March 24-25.
