Sac State women’s tennis splits weekend matches

Sacramento State women’s tennis team split its matches against the University of Arizona and the University of Texas-El Paso this weekend in Tucson, Ariz, securing the Hornets first victory of the season.

Saturday, Sac State was unsuccessful against No. 73 Arizona (7-0). The Wildcats swept the Hornets 4-0, winning doubles in straight sets and placing in the top three positions in singles play.

In singles-match play No. 2 and 3, freshmen Deimante Bulatovaite and Alina Soltanici lost in straight sets to Arizona’s Lauren Marker and Kim Stubbe, respectively.

Sophomore Jennifer Nguyen forced a third set against Arizona’s Lacey Smyth in match No. 1, but was defeated 6-1, 4-6, 10-6.

The Hornets bounced back Sunday against UTEP (1-5) picking up its first win of the season.

In match play, the Hornets defeated UTEP winning four singles matches and defeating the Miners in two of three doubles matches. Sophomore Daria Savchenko secured the Hornets’ win in match No. 3 and claimed a 7-6, 5-2 straight-set win over UTEP’s Marie LeBlond.

Bulatovaite and Soltanici collected their first singles-match play victories this season.

The Hornets outplayed the Miners  in its  first two doubles matches. The Hornets’ Savchenko and Bulatovaite defeated UTEP’s Marie LeBlond and Gabi Vazquez, 6-1. In match No. 3, senior Katharina Knoebl and Soltanici defeated UTEP’s Matlida Rose Tench and Daphne Visscher, 6-2.

Sac State (1-4) will next take the court against UC Davis Feb. 23 at 11 a.m.
