Sacramento State women’s basketball team returned to action after a two-week break with an 84-78 road victory over rival UC Davis Saturday afternoon.

It was the sixth consecutive victory for the Hornets (8-1), and final tuneup before the team begins facing Big Sky Conference competition on Jan. 2.

With the win, Sac State is off to its best start since the 1976-1977 season, when that year’s team started the year with same mark.

Junior guard Takara Burse led the way for the Hornets, scoring 22 points on 9-13 shooting, including a perfect 4-4 from 3-point range. Junior point guard Fantasia Hilliard also tallied 16 points and a game-high six assists.

As a team, the Hornets shot 37.8 percent (28-74) from the floor and 36.4 percent from 3-point range (12-33).

Junior forward Sydnee Fipps led the Aggies (4-8) with 21 points, while junior guard Kelsey Harris followed suit with 19 points.

Collectively, UC Davis shot 51.9 percent (28-54), including 35.7 percent from 3-point range (5-14).

Sac State will begin conference play at home Jan. 2, when it hosts Montana State at The Nest. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
