Sacramento State’s volleyball squad ended their 7 match losing streak in thrilling fashion against top seeded Northern Arizona Friday.

The Hornets knocked off the Lumberjacks in four sets (23-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-19), in front of a ruckus home crowd at Colberg Court. It was the first home match for the Hornets since Sept. 7.

With the victory, the Hornets improved to 6-8 on the year and 1-2 in conference play. Northern Arizona dropped to 8-4 with a 2-1 conference record.

Head coach Ruben Volta was proud of his the effort his team put forth on the court.

“Obviously we played better tonight,” Volta said. “We passed really well and served tough, I think we built momentum as the match went on because of it.”

Freshman outside hitter Morgan Stanley had a breakout night for Sac State with 17 kills. and a .412 hitting percentage. Sophomore outside hitter Sloan Lovett had 20 kills and finished the night with a .342 hitting percentage.

“It was a good win for our team since we came off a seven game losing streak,” Stanley said. “It really put our team together.”

Lovett said the team was ready all week for this match, entering play with a new mentality.

“I think all week during practice, we had a different energy and thought process,” Lovett said. “We wanted to change what happened in the last few weekends and we were just ready for this weekend.”

Coach Volta expects the team to continue to play their best and build off the momentum from the upset win.

“All season we talk about passing and playing defense, and the little things that are important,” Volta said. “We’re continuing to work hard and play better.”

Sophomore outside hitter Janae Vander Ploeg had 14 kills and a .278 percentage to lead Northern Arizona.

The Hornets finished with a team total of 61 kills and a .313 hitting percentage. The Lumberjacks amassed 52 kills and a .271 hitting percentage.

Sacramento State will take to their home court once again Saturday, when they square off against Southern Utah (2-10) at 7 p.m.
