The Hornets earned 16 career- and season-highs because of scores from every competitor, freshman through senior.

The Hornets started off with a strong 48.550 vault rotation score, without any falls and two successful exhibitions by sophomore Maddie Montoya and freshman Tina Necas.

Emiko Ono got her career high on vault with a 9.825, followed by season-highs from Kailey Hansen with a 9.75 and Nicole Meiller with a 9.6.

The Spartans responded with their season high vault score of a 48.650 and received career highs from Julia Greer with a 9.7, Casey McCord with a 9.6 and Alyssa Montalban with a 9.775.

With only one fall on bars, the Hornets scored their season-high of 48.325. Contributing on bars was Kalliah McCartney with her career high of a 9.725 and Meiller with her season high of a 9.75.

After two successful rotations, the beam team put up a season-high of 48.750, nearly a whole point over its previous high score. Five of the women (Kayla Wonderly with a 9.7, Dallas Smith with a 9.6, Claire Torgerson with a 9.3, Cayla Beutler with a 9.75, Hansen with a 9.825 and McCartney with a 9.875) earned career highs and another had her season high.

“It wasn’t just hitting scores, but the confidence I was seeing from these girls; to see those landings, to see those finishes and to see them excited, not only for themselves, but for each other. That’s what I want to see,” said beam coach Jamie Donkin.

Although Sac State was performing better than it had been all season, the score was tied twice during the third rotation while the Hornets were on beam and San Jose was on floor. This gave the Spartans a 0.175 lead by the end.

The Spartans put up a floor score of 48.925 with Casey McCord making her first floor appearance of the season, earning a 9.625, and Alyssa Montalban making her career high a score of a 9.825.

It all came down to the last event as Sac State moved onto floor, its most consistent event, and San Jose moved onto beam. The Hornets put up their season high score of 49.125, just 0.25 away from the team record.

Hansen set a new season-high and Sac State season record with a 9.9 on floor.

“I knew right when the first person, Kaila Kilwein, got that 9.825 that this was the meet, we’re building the scores, we’re going to do it as a team, and I’m going to get my 9.9,” Hansen said.

San Jose had trouble with three of its women falling off the beam, allowing Sac State to take the 194.750-193.000 victory over the Spartans.

“I felt like we had potential to do this from the beginning of the year, it just takes a while for a team to put it all together. That’s got to be the bottom line; we’ve got to try to hit four of four every meet from now on,” said head coach Kim Hughes.

All donations made tonight are going to Mercy Hospital to help with breast cancer treatments.

“People better watch out because we’re here, we’re ready. I think having a cause tonight was also really helpful. We weren’t doing this for us, we were flipping for the cure,” said team captain Cayla Beutler.

Sac State women’s gymnastics will return next week to The Nest to face another WAC competition, Southern Utah. It will be another fundraiser meet to raise awareness and contribute funds to Lou Gehrig’s disease and research.
