Despite a surge in bike thefts on campus last month, there were no more thefts this semester than a year ago, Sacramento State Police Det. Scott Christian said this week.

Police tallied 48 bike thefts this fall, the exact same amount as fall semester 2009.

From Nov. 5 through 16, there were 10 reported bike thefts &- an average of about one per day, Christian said.

On Nov. 16, police arrested Lois Coreno, 47, on suspicion of stealing a bike from The Well. Coreno “may have” had something to do with the spike in thefts, Christian said, though he stressed there was no evidence Coreno stole more than one bike.

In the three weeks following the arrest there have been 11 bike thefts.

Last month’s spike in bike thefts came as a record six sex crimes were reported on campus this semester. Several women were “groped,” two women were sexually assaulted and one was kidnapped and assaulted. Police did not believe any of the sex crimes were connected, Christian said.
