The Sacramento State women’s soccer team toppled the Oaks of Menlo College in a Sunday afternoon match, as the relentless Hornet offense scored nine unanswered goals.

The 9-0 win reset two nearly 16-year-old records dating back to Oct. 25, 1994, against Mills College. The first was for goals scored in a game, eight, and largest margin of victory.

Sac State improves to 2-4-1 on the season while the Oaks record now stands at 0-2-1.

In the first half, the Hornets scored six goals in the first 20 minutes, with their last goal coming at the 38:29 mark.

Forward Leah Larot scored two goals off of assists from teammates Victoria Ramirez and Jami Shimada.

Larot said she was able to score both goals due to Menlo’s inability to defend the ball.

“We noticed that they were a pretty flat defense,” Larot said. “So if we had a negative ball coming from one of our outside mids or outside forwards, it would was really easy to take a step back and get free of the defense and have the goal right in front of you.”

In the second half, Sac State kept the pressure on Menlo, as it had a total of 15 shots on the Oaks’ goalie Natalie Schader. Schader was able to save a total 16 shots from going in, except for two late goals by the Hornets at the 73:16 and 89:28 marks.

The goal at the 73:16 mark was the first in the Sac State career of midfielder Jessica Castano. She said she was thankful for all the help that her teammates gave her in scoring her first goal.

“It was very exciting. I felt a lot of support from my teammates today. I knew they worked just as hard for me to get my first goal. I really appreciated that,” Castano said.

Head coach Randy Dedini said the team still has schemes it will implement in its remaining three non-conference games in preparation for conference play, which begins Oct. 24.

“We are still working out some kinks, because last year we had some trouble scoring goals,” Dedini said. “So this year we have been playing in three different formations and trying to fine tune things so we can figure out who we are and how we are going to play going into conference.”

Sac State will be in action again at Hornet Soccer Field Sunday vs. Fresno State at 3:30 pm.
