The Sacramento State women’s tennis team was upset by No. 55 Saint Mary’s College 4-3 today at Rio Del Oro Racquet Club.

The Hornets came into the match as the No. 34 team in the country but could not overcome a determined St. Mary’s team.

There were no tiebreakers in doubles action, with the lone Hornet victory coming from the tandem of Tatsiana Kapshai and Alieen Tsan by a score of 8-1.

The teams split the singles matches, but it was not enough for Sac State to come away with a victory.

Rebeca Delgado won her match in three games, including two tiebreakers, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2). Clarisse Baca defeated the Gaels’ Claire Soper, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Tsan beat Alisa Spitzer, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Gaels move to 7-3 with the win and will almost surely improve on their No. 55 ranking. The Hornets fall to 8-4 on the season and snapped the team’s four-game winning streak.

Sac State returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Big Sky Conference rival Portland State University at the Rio Del Oro Racquet Club at 2:30 p.m. It is the Hornets’ first Big Sky match of the season.
