Women’s gymnastics falls to Davis and San Jose State

Sacramento State women’s gymnastics tried to sustain the momentum it had gained from its last home meet where they hit a season-high in points versus San Jose State.

The Hornets headed into a three-team meet on Friday that featured the host Spartans and UC Davis.

However the Hornets came up short as they scored 193.550 points to the Spartans first place finish of 194.550 and the Aggies score best for second with 193.750. With the third place finish, Sac State not only lost to two competitors but also lost crucial points in the Causeway Cup points standings to Davis.

As it stand right now, Sac State leads the points stands with 42.50 to Davis’s 38.68. They will need to win four out of the last seven matchups in order to repeat as Causeway Champions.

Sac State began their night in San Jose on the uneven bars. The Hornets scored 48.600 points for the event and were led by Amanda Blauvelt’s score of 9.775. Blauvelt finished second in the event to Davis’s Lida Gehlen who scored 9.875.

The Hornets then moved on to the beam, where a week earlier they had scored a season high of 49.000. On Friday night they fell short of that mark, posting a score of 48.075. Cayla Boyce led all competitors in the event posting 9.775 and giving her a second event win of the year.

Heading into the third rotation, Sac State found themselves in third place, with a team score of 96.500, San Jose was first with 97.575, and Davis second with 97.475.On floor, Eryn Stubblefield and Boyce tied for third with a score of 9.825. Their overall score for the event was 48.975, best for second between the three teams.

Blauvelt led the way for the Hornets in their final rotation of the night on vault. She scored a personal season high of 9.750, but only good enough for forth as the rest of the Hornets were no where to be seen in the top-ten. As a team, the Hornets score a 47.900, good for third.

In the all around standings, one Hornet, Stubblefield managed to make in at fifth overall. At the end of the night, The Hornets didn’t do enough to finish higher than third.

Sacramento will next compete on March 5 at 7pm, in another tri meet with UC Davis and Eastern Michigan.
