The Sacramento State women’s basketball team defeated Portland State University 83-78 on Friday at the Stott Center in Portland, Ore.

The win gives Sac State a five-game winning streak &- all within the Big Sky Conference. The Hornets are now in fourth place in the conference at 5-4 and have an overall record of 9-12.

The Vikings led 36-31 at halftime and continued to add on to its lead as soon as the half started. Sac State had several turnovers during the first seven minutes of the second half as the Vikings had a 10 point lead with 15 minutes remaining.

After a timeout was called by Hornet head coach Jamie Craighead, the Hornets limited their turnovers and the team started slowly getting back into the game. The Hornets went on an 8-0 run, which included two 3-pointers with 12 minutes left to give Sac State its first lead of the game, 61-60.

The last 10 minutes of the game was filled with many turnovers on both sides of the ball and many lead changes. It wasn’t until the final 30 seconds when senior forward Erika Edwards scored on an easy layup to give the Hornets the lead and caused the Vikings to take a timeout. Edwards finished the night with a double-double, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.

On the next possession, Portland State missed a 15-foot jump shot as the Hornets recovered the ball and got fouled with 8.5 seconds left in the game. Charday Hunt and Tika Koshiyama-Diaz secured the Hornets’ win with free throws in the final seconds.

The women’s team returns to the court on today at conference-leading Eastern Washington at 7:05 p.m.
