The Sacramento State baseball team started its season by winning two of three games against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, over the weekend at Earl E. Wilson Stadium.

The Hornets got off to a good start against the Runnin’ Rebels on Friday, winning 10-8 in 11 innings. Senior first baseman Josh Powers went 3-5 with a home run and two RBI. Junior outfielder Trevor Bloom went 2-5 with a home run and five RBI.

Junior Logan Todd pitched three innings of relief to pick up the victory and junior Andrew Galvan picked up the save.

On Saturday, the Hornets came out swinging. The team recorded 22 hits in a 19-5 victory. Powers, who was moved to the leadoff spot, went 3-6 with a triple and six RBI. Shortstop Derrick Chung went 3-5 with a home run, three RBI and four runs scored.

Junior Brandon Sandoval picked up the win after throwing five innings of three-hit, three-run ball.

The Rebels would get back at Sac State on Sunday with an 18-14 win.

Jarred Frierson, UNLV senior, hit three home runs, including a key two-run shot in the bottom of the eighth to help spur the victory.

Powers again led the Hornets, putting up three hits, a home run and two RBI. Chung also went deep and drove in three runs for Sac State.

Sac State, which was picked to finish last in the Western Athletic Conference by the coaches, now sits at 2-1 on the young season. The team hosts its home season-opener on Tuesday against the University of Nevada at 2 p.m. at Hornet Field.
