Comeback against Loyola Marymount comes up short

The Sacramento State men’s basketball team lost to the Loyola Marymount University Tigers on Sunday, 82-78, in an up-and-down affair.

It was a game of runs, as the Tigers started off the game with 10-0. Loyola Marymount would eventually push the lead to 28-13 midway through the first half.

The Hornets went on a 15-2 run to make it 30-28 in the latter part of the first half. A technical foul on Hornet head coach Brian Katz and missed opportunities helped to swing momentum back to the Tigers before the half. Loyola Marymount would lead 37-30 at halftime.

That momentum would carry through to the second half. The Tigers went on an 18-2 run to start the half, building their largest lead of the game, 55-34.

From that time, the Hornets would outscore the Tigers 44-27, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Senior guard Antonio Flaggs had a chance to tie the game at 81 with a three-pointer, but it came up short, as did the Hornet comeback.

Junior guard Sultan Toles-Bey led the Hornets with 17 points on 5-13 shooting. Senior center Justin Eller, freshman forward John Dickson and Flaggs all chipped in 14 points. Dickson also corralled a team-high seven rebounds.

The Tigers were led Jarred DuBois, who scored 24 points on 7-15 shooting. Guard Vernon Teel nearly had a triple-double, as he scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out seven assists. Forward Drew Viney contributed 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Tigers, who improve to 7-7 on the season.

The loss drops the Hornets to 6-8 overall. They return to action on Thursday at 3:05 p.m., when they travel to Eastern Washington University. The Hornets then go to Portland State University on Saturday to take on the Vikings at 7:05 p.m.
