The Sacramento State men’s basketball team beat William Jessup University on Monday night, 74-42, for the Hornets’ second-consecutive home victory.

The Hornets got out to a 22-point lead, 35-13, in the first half. The Warriors used a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 39-23 at the half. Sac State shot a season-high 58.8 percent from the field, including 50 percent from beyond the arc.

“We started off getting inside and taking some good shots,” said senior guard Domineek Daniel. “We just took our time.”

A key factor in the high shooting percentage was the size advantage the Hornets had on the Warriors.

“We wanted to go inside early and often, and we did” said Hornet head coach Brian Katz. “”

Senior center Justin Eller had a season-high 14 points on 6-8 shooting from the floor. He also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

“We didn’t do anything differently,” Eller said. “My teammates did a good job of setting screens and passing the ball. I just happened to be under the hoop.”

Daniel added 10 points on 4-6 shooting, four rebounds and two assists.

The Hornet defense held William Jessup to 25 percent shooting from the field, including 16 percent from downtown. The 42 points is a season-low allowed by Sac State.

Sac State also took care of the ball, turning it over 13 times – two fewer than its season average. Senior guard Mike Marcial had four assists and no turnovers in 18 minutes of action.

The win improves the Hornets to 6-7 overall. The Warriors fall to 3-10 on the season.

The men’s team returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Loyola Marymount University at 1:05 p.m.
