The Sacramento State men’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Idaho State University Bengals, 64-63, on Saturday night at the Hornets Nest.

The win was also the team’s first in Big Sky Conference play this season.

The score was close for the entire game, as the largest lead for either team was seven, by the Bengals after making the first shot of the second half.

With the score 55-53 Hornets, freshman swingman John Dickson hit a three-pointer that put the Hornets up five with under 40 seconds to play.

Bengal guard Broderick Gilchrest immediately came back with three-point play to cut the lead to 58-56.

Senior guard Mike Marcial was fouled with 30.7 seconds remaining and hit two free throws to put Sac State up 60-56.

On the next possession, senior guard Domineek Daniel came up with a block to give possession back to the Hornets. Dickson was fouled and would miss the front end of a one-and-one, allowing Gilchrest to come down and get another layup, making it 60-58.

The ensuing inbounds pass eventually ended up in Sultan Toles-Bey’s hands, who is now shooting 90.2 percent from the charity strike. He sank two free throws to make it 62-60. Gilchrest came down and made yet another easy layup.

Daniel was fouled on the inbound pass and made two free throws, the second of which proved to be the game-winner.

Senior center Justin Eller had a double-double, scoring 10 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. He got the start as senior forward Michael Selling missed the game due to an illness.

Dickson had a career-high 19 points on 8-14 shooting. Toles-Bey had 10 points and six assists, while Marcial had eight points, five assists and three steals.

Free throw shooting had been a concern in recent games for the Hornets, and the overall mark from this game — 12 for 20 — is not impressive. However, Marcial, Toles-Bey and Daniel all hit clutch free throws, which helped the Hornets to their fifth win of the season.

Gilchrest led all scorers with 25 points on 10-18 shooting. He also had four steals. Amorrow Morgan scored 17 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Demetrius Monroe pulled down a Bengal-high nine boards. Idaho State falls to 2-9 overall and 0-1 in Big Sky play.

The Hornets move to 5-7 overall, 1-1 in conference play, with the victory. The team hosts William Jessup on Monday at 7:35 p.m.
