The Sacramento State men’s basketball team matched its win total from the entire 2008-09 season with a 90-75 victory over Bethany University Bruins Wednesday at the Hornet’s Nest.

The Hornets led 50-38 at halftime and led by 27 points in the second half before a late run by the Bruins cut the lead.

Junior guard Sultan Toles-Bey led the team with 17 points on 6-10 shooting, including three three-pointers. He also added four assists, two blocked shots and played 34 minutes.

Freshman forward John Dickson, the team’s leading scorer, chipped in with 15 points on 6-8 shooting. However, his minutes were limited due to foul trouble in both halves.

Senior guard Mike Marcial had a game-high 10 assists and no turnovers off the Hornet bench.

Senior big men forward Michael Selling and center Justin Eller each scored 10 points, while Selling snagged a team-high eight rebounds.

Selling said he is happy that the team has already matched its win total from last season.

“It’s great, it’s really good,” Selling said. “Four games into the season, we already matched it, you know? But we’re not trying to stop here. We’re trying to keep going. We’ve got a big game this weekend with Oregon State.”

Head coach Brian Katz said he was pleased with the team’s performance.

“The first half, we only had three turnovers,” Katz said. “Our emphasis? has been offensive execution and efficiency. We shot 51 percent from the field and 40 percent from three.”

Katz said the team has more talent this year, which is a reason for some of the early-season success.

The Hornets had a distinct size advantage over the Bruins, which showed in the rebounding totals – Sac State out-rebounded Bethany 44-26, including a 12-2 advantage on the offensive glass.

Bethany senior guard Jason Maples had a game-high 25 points on 8-14 shooting and five three pointers.
