Julie Shutler is no club golfer, which she proved with her performance at the Chip-N Invitational in Lincoln, Neb. on Tuesday.

The Sacramento State sophomore set a new school record for lowest 54-hole golf score the event.

She shot 70-72-72 to finish with a 214, eclipsing the previous record of 216 set by Margaux Sheehan during the 2007 Big Sky Conference Championships. Incidentally, the Hornets won the conference title that year.

Shutler also became the first female golfer to finish with a score under par in any tournament. Par for this event was 72.

Shutler’s record-setting performance was good for third in the tournament. North Dakota State’s true freshman Amy Anderson finished six-under par in her first collegiate event. Emily Powers of the University of Kansas finished one shot ahead of Shutler at three-under.

Nebraska head coach Robin Krapfl said Shutler’s performance was impressive.

“To be able to come in and play this golf course after only one practice round and shoot the number she did was very impressive,” Krapfl said. “She’s definitely off to a great start.”

Krapfl said nothing in particular stood out, but said Shutler was a solid golfer.

Sac State finished in fifth place overall with a team score of 904. The University of Missouri easily took the event with a score of 878.
