Friendship through sign

Sacramento State’s American Sign Language Club is more than just watching hands dance through the air to communicate. Students in the club enjoy each others’ company while laughing and speaking in ASL.

Todd Lamarr, senior deaf studies major and past president of the ASL club, said the club is a good way to meet students with similar interests, such as ASL.

Kayleigh Lembke, senior social work major and social coordinator of ASL and deaf studies, said everyone is welcome to join the club.

“This club is comfortable; it is easy, and you don’t have to know sign.” Lembke said. Many students who are in the ASL Club have become more proficient in ASL.

“The ASL club is the greatest way to get your feet wet in ASL,” Lembke said, “I cannot roll my ‘R’s’ or do French noises, but I gravitated toward ASL because I could hold it and see it in the air,” she said.

Sydney Slater, junior nursing major and vice president of the ASL Club, said she recommends students interested in the deaf community and deaf studies to seek information and get involved in the ASL club by attending the socials.

Socials, which will be on various nights during the week, will include pizza nights, movie nights, and bar nights. The club has also booked deaf comedian Peter Cook for April 16, 2010.

Other than socials, the club plans to meet the third Thursday of each month. The first meeting will be from 7:30 to 9 p.m. tomorrow in the Oak Room in the University Union.

Lisalee Egbert, faculty adviser of the ASL Club, said the first meeting will discuss the club. Bill Vicars, a guest from the deaf community, will also share about his experience in an international deaf event that he has recently returned from.

The next meeting’s agenda will vary from playing games, watching movies, and enjoying guest speakers.

Justin Mullins, deaf studies major and president of the ASL Club, said the club’s goal is to add membership and gain support from the deaf studies program and the deaf community.

Mullins said students can seek information about the club through Facebook and fliers soon to be on campus.
