This week Sacramento State’s PRIDE Center and Queer Straight Alliance group are celebrating Pride Week.

Cynthia dela Cruz, PRIDE coordinator and undergraduate in Health Science, said Pride month is celebrated around the world in June, but since most colleges end in May, they take a week in April to celebrate.

“Pride week is usually around Day of Silence which is the third Wednesday in April, but we decided to have ours this week to truly focus on ourselves and have a celebration (for the campus),” dela Cruz said.

Wednesday students could be seen wearing red T-shirts with the words “Sac State Day of Silence” on the front and a screaming mouth on the back with the words “What will you do to end the silence?”

The shirts were donated by the Women’s Resource Center to all those who wished to have one.

Dragonsani Renteria, a deaf transgender, spoke Monday in Mariposa Hall to a crowd of about 200 people about the history of the deaf queer minority.

About three-fourths of the audience was straight, dela Cruz said. She expected more of a gay or lesbian crowd, but was happy to see the turn out.

“The community has been really supportive of the Pride Center and there is more support resource-wise since we’ve had the center,” dela Cruz said.

The free events for the rest of the week are as follows:

Thursday: 1:30 p.m., Brown bag Lunch Discussion, “What does pride mean to you?” in the Library Quad.

Saturday: 7 p.m., “Kings of Drag: A Love Story” a documentary, in the University Union’s Hinde Auditorium.

Saturday: 8:30 p.m., Sacramento Kings of Drag’s “Revolt,” a one hour live performance in the Hinde Auditorium. Danielle Sazio can be reached at [email protected]
