Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez delivered his annual fall address to the campus community Thursday in the University Union Ballroom.

Gonzalez discussed the progress of “Destination 2010,” a plan he set forth during his first year as president in January of 2004. He announced the university’s recent purchase of 25 acres of land south of Folsom Blvd. at Ramona Ave. The land will be developed into housing for faculty and staff.

The president’s plans also call for a new event center, which will house the Sac State basketball and volleyball teams.

With the current construction of a new parking structure near the football field, Gonzalez encouraged the campus community to find alternative ways of transportation by carpool and public transportation. The construction has resulted in the temporary loss of 800 parking spots.

He also introduced his plan to link the campus to the nearby light rail station located at 65th street. More information on parking and transportation can be found at www.csus.edu/utaps.

Gonzalez also stated that there are three restaurant services undergoing construction that are scheduled to open within the upcoming fall semester.

Upcoming events were mentioned, including the unveiling of the new Sac State logo on Sept. 1, and the Green and Gold Gala in October.

Gonzalez discussed the university’s goal of academic excellence and the desire to make a stronger link to campus life both inside and outside of the classroom with Student Activities.

He promised that the year ahead will be a busy one and that “Destination 2010” is a top priority.

The president discussed the concerns of the budget and how it had delayed projects in the past. Gonzalez provided information about the 2005-06 year budget and the possibilities it brings.

The 2005-06 budget for Sac State is at a 5.4 percent general fund increase, which is the first in three years. With this increase the university will be able to increase student enrollment by 10,000 and provide an increase in the eligibility for grants.

Gonzalez started the address by welcoming new and old members of the faculty. He expressed his gratitude towards their hard work and dedication to the students, introduced recently joined faculty, staff and management as well as the new leadership positions for the upcoming year.

Gonzalez concluded his address by expressing his pride in his role at Sac State and his pride to work with the university’s staff and faculty.
