Amidst energetic screaming by protestors, sporadic and sometimes melodious honking by passing autos, bongo drums, cymbals, guitars, flags and banners, an anti-Iraq war protest took place Saturday, March 4, at 16th and Broadway streets in front of Tower Records.

Along with chants of: “What do we want? Peace! When do we want it? Now!” the crowd kept up an active presence and energy to convey their message.

Sacramento State Sociology Professor Paul Burke was on the front lines with Lisa Faulkner Barnes, famed anti-war activist and Sac State student. Burke is also the faculty adviser for the Sac State chapter of Progressive Democrats of America.

According to Stephen Pearcy, who organized the event, the flags, which he purchased, were those of countries, like Lebanon, routinely demonized, unnecessarily by the Bush administration.

The protest, which began at 4 p.m., was planned by Sacramento for Democracy and Stephen Pearcy and his wife, Virginia Pearcy.

By 5:15 p.m. roughly 200 protestors, had attended with around 150 present at any one time, Stephen Pearcy said. The crowd was diverse and attracted people 40-year-old and older.

The protest will continue for the next two Saturdays at this location, the last of which will commemorate the third anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
