Steps are being taken to revive the Sacramento State Young Democrats and the College Republicans at CSU Sacramento.

Junior government major Rachel Shetka will head the Democratic organization. Shetka is a member of the Sacramento County Young Democrats, which consists of young professionals between the ages of 18 and 35 who help on campaigns and participate in various events that pertain to the Democratic Party.

“We are looking for anybody who is interested in getting the organization functioning again and participating in various activities,” Shetka said. Some of the activities members will participate in are voter registration drives, sponsoring visitors and participating in acting as a feeder group to local campaigns.

“If we had a club during the last election, we would have had access to the Democratic State Convention,” Shetka said.

Shetka has had a great deal of involvement with the Democratic Party. Gov. Gray Davis appointed Shetka as the Student Representative on the California Post-Secondary Education Commission while she attended Santa Barbara City College. She also worked as a volunteer at Bill Clinton?s inauguration.

Wednesday nights are being considered for meetings, but that is pending. Look for tables to be set up outside of the Union to sign up to get more information on becoming a member of Sac State?s Young Democrats.

Senior government major Brandon Abell will be leading the College Republicans.

The College Republicans have been inactive since 2002, and Abell is looking to restart the group.

The mission of the College Republicans will be to promote activity of college-aged people in the Republican Party.

“I would like to contribute to dialogue on campus. We?ll be holding voter registration drives, volunteering for local candidates and having guest speakers. I also encourage anybody who is interested in being a Republican and people of all viewpoints to join,” Abell said.

Official meeting times for the College Republicans are pending.
