Hornet Online exclusiveDownside’s latest CD induces everything but “Sleep”

Downside is a local band in Sacramento that has been playing the circuit for a while now. I was given their latest CD at a show last summer when they played downtown at the Capitol Garage on 1427 L St. It took me a while to review, but when I finally had time to listen, I was pleasantly surprised.

The album, titled “Sleep,” definitely has a darker feel to it. But that aspect does not take away from the complexity of the music. It plays with the power of an artist’s first attempt at releasing long bottled up feelings.

Many of the intros put you into an eerie state of mind, only to be shocked back into reality when the strong guitar chords chime in. Downside brings raw emotion back to rock and roll, without the whining and complaining aspect that so many bands, like Creed, rely on today.

From beginning to end, “Sleep’s” strong and fast paced beats are not lost behind any meaningless or catchy words, but helped by the lyrics that define what the music is already making clear to the listener.

The CD’s title track, “Sleep,” is a perfect example of how the dynamics of Downside’s musicians come together, creating a balanced effect that straight rock music is lacking in today’s mainstream music world.

I would recommend this album to anyone who is a lover of traditional rock or even alternative music. It is a work of art that is best listened to from beginning to end.

This album can be purchased at any of the bands shows, which are usually listed in the Sacramento News and Review. They’re not being sold in any of the local record stores at this time, but I’m keeping my eyes open for it.
