Murder trial underway

The trial of a former Sacramento State student accused of murder began this month in San Joaquin County.

Sarah Dutra, 22, is on trial for allegedly taking part in the murder of Sacramento attorney Larry McNabney, who disappeared in September 2001.

Dutra was arrested in April 2002 after she was implicated in the crime by Laren Sims.

Sims, McNabney’s wife, fled to Florida but was apprehended by authorities there. While in Florida custody, Sims committed suicide, but not before implicating Dutra in the killing.

Authorities contend Sims and Dutra poisoned McNabney with horse tranquilizers while the three attended a horse show in Southern California.

McNabney’s body was found buried in a San Joaquin County vineyard in February 2002.

Sims ran McNabney’s law firm, where Dutra was a receptionist while attending Sac State.

If convicted of the crime, Dutra could face life in prison.
