Hot Hornet hang-out spots

Where to hang out on a campus of 28,000 students isn’t always a choice – you just go where there’s room! But even on our crowded campus, a few places hold the popular hangout title. These are places to see and be seen, places crowded with people eating and relaxing with friends.

When the weather is nice, the library quad and River Front Market are popular lunchtime hangouts.

Junior Mason Mitchell and his friends say the river front center is perfect because it’s close to food and their classes, and someone is always there to talk to.

“When you see one another, you tend to stop and chat for a little bit,” Mitchell said. He is there pretty much every day, “between and during classes.”

You are bound to run into friends and classmates in the busy library quad. If you don’t, you can always do what Shannon Reagan and Crystal Simpkins do: watch everyone else. Reagan and Simpkins, both seniors, meet Tuesdays and Thursdays in the library quad to catch up on gossip and people watching. “It’s very Feng Shui,” Says Reagan of the quad’s peaceful fountain and shady benches.

For indoor action, the Union is the most popular place among all groups for almost any activity. Whether you need refuge from the cold, a bite to eat or a nap between classes, the Union has it all.

“If we’re not in class, we’re here,” said Rajan Gonzales and Elaine Dano. They enjoy the couches and comfortable temperature and the fact that food and restrooms are readily available.

Even though he frequents the River Front Market, Mitchell points out that the Union’s music room is good to “relax and mellow down.”

The second floor of the Union is a popular study spot for serious studying, but it’s also known for “pseudo studying,” where you say you are going to study but no one really brings their books. “People at the tables are more serious. The ones on the couches are here to relax,” Dano said.

The library is your best bet if you truly want to study. According to Senior Rubin Martinez, the levels of quietness increase as you go upstairs. The fourth floor is a no talking zone.

According to Martinez, the Union is useful for group studying because you can talk without disturbing anyone.

With all the great places to hang out at Sac State, it’s tempting to kick back all day. But really, try and go to class once in a while.
