English professor retiring
March 13, 2002
One of Sacramento State’s veteran English Professors will retire this semester.
For the past 39 years, Dr. Victor Comerchero has been stimulating the minds of Sac State students.
Comerchero, a Los Angeles native, received his bachelors in English at UCLA, and went on to obtain his Ph.D. at the University of Iowa before joining the English Department faculty at Sac State.
Comerchero has served on multiple committees and was also a member of the Academic Senate.
He has taught just about every English course on campus, with his favorite being Great European Novels.
“My time at Sac State has been wonderful,” Comerchero said.
Former Sac State student, Michael Phillips said that Comerchero’s classes were interesting and challenging.
“Dr. Comerchero enjoys teaching and it shows…a good teacher gets excited about what they are teaching,” Phillips said.
Comerchero has a lot of memories from the past 39 years.
He said that the campus has gone through a lot of interesting changes and trends.
“My best memories of Sac State were in the 60s. The campus and the students were much more alive. Students had such a belief in themselves, in what they could do,” Comerchero said.
After his retirement, Comerchero plans to write, read and travel.
“I want to go back to Italy, and then to Greece and Turkey,” Comerchero said.
A retirement reception will be held in Comerchero’s honor on Mar. 13, at 7 p.m. in the Valley Suite located in the Student Union.
