Author dispels myth of “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” today
April 3, 2001
Author and professor at San Jose State Kristen Iversen will read excerpts from her latest novel, ” Molly Brown: Unraveling the Myth,” at Sacramento State?s Mendocino Hall at 3 p.m. today.
Books, magazines, broadway musicals, hollywood movies and plays have not accurately portrayed the real woman, Molly Brown, Iversen said.
In fact, her real life has been distorted beyond recognition. Her name was changed from Margaret Tobin Brown to Molly Brown,” The Unsinkable Molly Brown.”
“Molly Brown:Unraveling the Myth” is the first full-length biography of this American icon, and the story it tells is of a passionate and outspoken crusader for Civil Rights, Iversen said.
Iversen is a recent winner of theColorado Book Award for Biography, the Biennial Barbara Sadler Award for best book written on a Western American subject and a finalist for theWILLA Award for Nonfiction, said Frank Whitlatch, from Sac State?s Office of Public Affairs.
” She has done a lot of research on the real person, not the myth,” Whitlatch said. ” She is touring the college circuit to promote her book because she believes college students are avid readers.”
